Wall Decor Landscape Scroll Painting
Description
Kano School painting depicts ink landscape with a mountain temple and pagoda. Painted with ink on silk.
Kano Hogai (1828-1888) was a Japanese painter from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. In the third year of the Koka era (1845-1848), he went to Edo and studied under Kano Osanobu (1796-1846) and Kano Masanobu (1823-1879).
He participated in an art exhibition hosted by Ernest Francisco Fenollosa (1835-1908) in 1898. After that, he worked together with Fenollosa and Tenshin Okakura to focus his efforts on the modernization movement of Japanese painting. He also worked to establish the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts).
The painting and scroll mounting is in reasonable condition for the age, with some marks, light crease, and foxing are present on the painting itself. Some marks, light crease, traces of restoration and foxing are present on the scroll mounting due to it’s age. It is accompanied by a paulownia wood storage box.
