Description

Mt. Penglai/Hourai with blooming cherry blossoms and the rising sun. Painted with ink and pigments on paper. Signed and sealed.

Mt. Penglai (lit. Penglai Immortal Island) is an imaginary sacred mountain in ancient times, China and one of the three sacred mountains (Horai, Hojo, Eishu). It is said to be located in the East Sea of Shandong, where immortals live and make immortality medicines, and the palace has golden jade, white birds and beasts, and jade trees. However, if you look far away, it looks like a cloud, and if you get close, it disappears somewhere.

Hama Kosho (1895-1990) was born in Suwa, Nagano Prefecture. He learned painting from Konoshima Okoku (1877-1938). In 1921(Taisho 10), he was selected for Teiten art exhibition. In 1945, he won the Japan Art Institute Prize.

The painting and scroll mounting is in fine condition. It is accompanied by an original paulownia wood storage box with the artist’s signature.
